Willie Scannell, originally from Ballycotton but now living in Shanagarry, was one of the recipients of the recent Cork County Mayor’s Community Awards which took place at Cork County Hall.
Nominated by Christine Lane who is the East Cork Municipal District representative on the Cork County Public Participation Network, the following is part of Christine’s submission:
“Mr. Willie Scannell has been involved in his community for over 50 years. His involvement is across all areas of the community – from the older members to the youngest members. He gives freely of his time and greets and chats with everyone he meets without exception and encourages all those he meets to get involved in their community.
“Willie, who is from a rural farming background, became a Macra na Feirme member as a young man. Macra was not only a social outlet but kindled within Willie a sense of community which he has fully embraced. He is an active member of many organisations and many of the core community facilities in the area came about with the aid of Willie’s involvement.
