Last week, on 30th January, Malaysia swore in its new king, writes Tony Harpur. Under a unique system that dates from 1957, when the country became independent of the British Empire, Malaysia enjoys a rotating system of monarchy – the nine sultans on the Malay Peninsula take turns as King of Malaysia. The term of office of the monarch is just five years – like an elected president.
Add to this is the fact that Chinese New Year (the Chinese Spring Festival) began on Tuesday 5th February 2019, introducing the Year of the Pig (a symbol of contented prosperity).
Now you might wonder what all this has to do with East Cork. Well, there are two important links between Midleton and Rostellan with both Malaysia and Hong Kong! These two events in South East Asia and China give me excellent grounds for discussing the links.
