Golden Jubilee sets shining example for Shanagarry Art Group’s 50th annual exhibition

This month, the Shanagarry Art Group will hold their fiftieth Annual Art Exhibition from Friday July 19 to Saturday August 3 at MyPlace, Midleton, writes Becky Grice.

With this being their Golden Jubilee, it’s a golden (see what we did there?) opportunity to sit down and chat with Chairperson Mary Hurley and some of the group’s 21 members about their artistic beginnings, their plans for the future and why, when it comes to travelling to Berlin, one should never, ever, let go of one’s carry-on luggage…

“We look like something out of The Handmaid’s Tale,” Mary Hurley laughs, as the Midleton & District News looks at a magnificent montage of photographs that have been compiled to resemble the ‘Amplemännchen’ – literally the ‘little traffic light man’, who adorns all pedestrian signals in Germany.

The image to which Mary is referring sees the 12 members who made the trip to Germany draped in red blankets, enjoying dinner in a traditional restaurant where, apparently it was – and this is a direct quote – “bloody freezing!”
