Midleton Hospital’s respite unit to re-open ‘within weeks’

Fears that Midleton Community Hospital’s St. Mary’s respite unit would remain closed long-term or perhaps permanently have been allayed with news that the facility is to re-open in the coming weeks, reports Christy Parker.

The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) compelled the seven-bed ward to close last December after inspectors found inefficiencies in fire and safety standards.

The closure affected three respite, one community support and three continuing care beds and sparked concern across the local community that the closure might become prolonged.

Midleton-based Cork County Councillor Noel Collins says he received confirmation of the planned re-opening after he made enquiries directly to Minister of State for Mental Health and Older People Jim Daly. Cllr Collins and Minister Daly served alongside each other on Cork County Council for 16 years in times past.
