On Monday, April 15th, Midleton Community Sponsorship Group officially launched the Midleton/Syria Initiative, formed to enable the Midleton area to sponsor a Syrian refugee family; this programme is under the auspices of the Department of Justice, with local support from SECAD. The launch was held at Midleton Community Forum, and was attended by a broad spectrum of Midleton’s population.
The initiative arose from the government’s commitment to sponsor 4,000 vetted refugees from the Syrian area, in response to the humanitarian crisis subsequent to the war which began in 2011.
In Lebanon, Turkey, and Jordan, alone, there are between 5 and 6 million Syrians in either refugee camps, or with refugee status. There is a severe burden on services. Conditions in the camps are variable, with limited access to food and water not unusual, and access to education and medical care very limited.
