Castlemartyr 0-8 Russell Rovers 1-9
Dungourney was the venue for the meeting of Castlemartyr and Russell Rovers in the quarter-final of the Michael O’Connor Motor Factors Junior “A” Football championship last Sunday afternoon.
In the splendid conditions both sides tried to play an expansive game with Jack McGann getting the opening score for Castlemartyr while Brian Hartnett was on the end of a super move to rifle home a goal for Russell Rovers in the 5th minute. That goal was to prove crucial as there was little to choose between with Fintan Murray pointing for the Shanagarry side.
Mike Kelly shot a good point for Castlemartyr who trailed by 0-2 to 1-4 at the end of the opening quarter where Brian Hartnett and Josh Beausang hit points for Russell Rovers. Castlemartyr were finding it difficult to get scores against a solid defence with just an Eoghan Martin point to add to their tally by half time. In contrast Russell Rovers had a more potent attack and points from Kevin Ivers and Josh Beausang left Russell Rovers in front by 1-5 to 0-3 at half time.
